Resistance genes can enter bacteria from marine bacteria

Release date: 2007-09-19

Drug-resistant genes can enter the human body from marine bacteria. According to the Science and Technology Daily News, Tokyo, September 17th, Japanese researchers found that drug-resistant genes can be transferred from marine bacteria in nature to coliforms or enterococci in humans.
Ehime University Professor Suzuki Satoshi and others planted five kinds of marine bacteria together with coliforms and enterococci. These five marine bacteria all contain drug resistance genes, and tetracycline antibiotics are ineffective. The researchers found that in the case of similar cell membrane structures of marine bacteria and human bacteria, the resistance genes contained in marine bacteria enter the coliforms and enterococci, with a probability of up to one thousandth. Studies have shown that drug-resistant genes can enter bacteria in the human body from pathogenic bacteria such as coliform bacteria, thus making antibiotics lose their efficacy.
