Electronic nose: rapid early diagnosis of cancer

Electronic nose: rapid early diagnosis of cancer

Release date: 2010-08-25

The Institute of Nanotechnology, School of Chemical Engineering, Haifa University of Technology, Israel, recently announced the development of a biomimetic electronic nose for early diagnosis of cancer that can easily and accurately diagnose cancers and locations such as lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer.
The research team led by Dr. Heck of the Institute developed a biomimetic electronic nose inspired by the dog's olfactory function. Previous studies have found that trained dogs can sniff out early cancer based on exhaled gases from cancer patients. The electronic nose they developed is equipped with a nanosensor similar to the dog's olfactory organ. Clinical tests on 177 volunteers aged 20 to 35 indicate that the electronic nose diagnoses lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer based on their exhaled gases. The accuracy of the four cancers is 92%, and it can distinguish the type and location of cancer.
