Study found that ginkgo beneficial to relieve symptoms of MS

Some findings by researchers at the Department of Neurology and the OHSU MS Center at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) School of Medicine have shown that Ginkgo biloba can improve the attention of patients with impaired cognitive function in MS, with very few side effects. Researcher Dr. Lovera said that patients who received ginkgo therapy performed better on the attention test. In the test, 20 of the 39 patients received Ginkgo biloba and the remaining 19 used placebo. The researchers found that the ginkgo group was 4 seconds (approximately 13%) faster than the placebo group in the control of color and sentence tests. This test can measure attention and "execution functions" such as planning, making decisions, and controlling targeted behavior and implementing well-behaved behaviors. Ginkgo appears to be more beneficial to MS patients who have problems with the Stroop test. Therefore, the researchers conducted another experiment to select patients who performed poorly in this particular test. Ginkgo biloba is an herb that treats many diseases in China. It contains a powerful class of antioxidants called flavoglycosides that have been shown to be neuroprotective in animal models of spinal cord injury. It also contains terpene-lactones that inhibit platelet activating factors, which play an important role in regulating vascular function that mediates inflammation and adhesion of inflammatory cells to blood vessels. The results of this study indicate that ginkgo supplementation plays an important role in the treatment of MS. It can improve the cognitive performance of specific patient groups, but its safety and efficacy must also be determined in larger clinical trials.
