The Effect of Nutrition on Pig Sex Selection

The Effect of Nutrition on Pig Sex Selection

The Canadian study (Reprod., Fert., and Develop. 18 347-355) showed that limiting the intake of sows during the last week of lactation and the post-weaning breeding period had a significant effect on the number of embryos of different genders.

These sows are restricted to the extent that they are in the actual negative energy balance after weaning, 13% crude protein and 17% fat during lactation. Limiting sows to sows did not affect the time interval between weaning and estrus, and the ovulation rate was not affected.

However, for restricted sows, the survival of embryos at 30 days of pregnancy is less, and the proportion of female embryos is relatively low.

The mechanism for gender selection is not currently clear.

The results of this study show that the restriction of feeding for the first week of pregnancy in pregnant sows results in a significant reduction in the number of surviving female embryos and limits the total survival of embryos.
